The present paper reports the results of the methanol extract of Haplophyllum hispanicum Spach on single or repeated local 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol acetate (TPA) administration and in the oxazolone-induced contact-delayed hypersensitivity mouse ear edemas. Two topical anti-inflammatory aryl naphthalide lignans were isolated from the active fractions of the methanol extract. They were identified by spectroscopic methods, including 13C NMR and heteronuclear multiple bond correlation (HMBC), as diphyllin acetyl apioside and tuberculatin. Abstract The quantity of cellulose synthesized on growing cotton bolls and the corresponding degree of polymerisation have been measured as a function of time. It was found that the biosynthesis proceeds in two distinct stages, beginning with a slow process yielding the “primary” cellulose with a non-uniform degree of polymerisation of about 2000–6000 followed by a more rapid process yielding a large amount of “secondary cellulose” with a high and uniform degree of polymerisation of about 14000 (mol. wt. 2.3·106). Aim. to determine DNA interaction modes for a series of 1,4-dihydropyridines with different biological activities synthesized in the Latvian Institute of Or-ganic Synthesis. Methods. Affinity of the compounds to DNA was detected by UV/VIS spec-trometry and re-proofed by means of spectrofluorimetry, EBr extrusion assay, cyclic voltammetry and DNA melting. Abstract The content of several phenolic compounds in needles of 20- to 30-year-old Norway spruce trees (Picea abies) was measured using HPLC. The results of two forestry sites in middle western Germany are reported in this paper. They are part of a research programme on novel forest decline which was carried out in various regions of Germany. Distinct amounts of picein, catechin, piceatannol glucoside, and other phenolic compounds were detected in the studied spruce needles. Additionally, their contents changed in relation to damage. The geometries of the thiazole ring and the nitramino groups in N-(3H-thiazol-2-ylidene)nitramine, C 3 H 3 N 3 O 2 S, (I), and N-methyl-N-(thiazol-2-yl)nitramine, C 4 H 5 N 3 O 2 S, (II), are very similar. The nitramine group in (II) is planar and twisted along the C-N bond with respect to the thiazole ring. In both structures, the asymmetric unit includes two practically equal molecules. In (I), the molecules are arranged in layers connected to each other by N-H...N and much weaker C-H...O hydrogen bonds. In the crystal structure of (II), the molecules are arranged in layers bound to each other by both weak C-H...O hydrogen bonds and S...O dipolar interactions.

The aspects of molecular-structure and biological conversion have been studied for 12 derivatives of the endosulfan ether 1 [4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8- hexachloro- 1, 3, 3a, 4, 7, 7a- hexahydro- 4, 7-methanoisobenzofuran]. Adults of a normal house-fly strain (Musca domestica) have been used in the assay. Derivatives of 1 monosubstituted in position I are found to be converted substantially faster than products disubstituted in position I and 3, respectively. Metabolism is inhibited for all compounds studied after application of piperonyl butoxide as a synergist. Life-long antigenic burden determines a condition of chronic inflammation, with increased lymphocyte activation and proinflammatory cytokine production. A large number of studies have documented changes in zinc metabolism in experimental animal models of acute and chronic inflammation and in human chronic inflammatory conditions. In particular, modification of zinc plasma concentration, as well as intracellular disturbance of antioxidant intracellular pathways, has been found in aging and in some age-related diseases.
